The second largest natural gas field in the world is discovered at Slochteren in the province of Groningen. Within a few years, new natural gas mains are installed serving millions of people. Revenues from the sale of gas in the Netherlands and abroad make it possible to expand the welfare state to guarantee an acceptable standard of living for all.
